"Hah bloody hah."

But she didn't turn on her heel and walk away.

Bernard was never much of a cook. Never had to be, really. Family was mostly well fed on their own. When he went off to boot camp, they provided meals, and when he was on the field, he ate MREs during the wargames and whatever slop was provided to him at his stations.

Now, he could tell you what sort of wine could go with those meals. A Chardonnay for that pundi rice would compliment the rich flavors it would provide. Hardrian's Moussaka would be best complimented by a Chianti, as it was a rather heavy dish. The fish would require something more, a dry rosé came to his mind as he explored the dish. Yes, it would compliment it more. Hopefully his younger brother was pushing their wares upon the stall owners and the guests as he was away, dealing with other matters. Bernard had a mind for other things, but the basic of business was drilled into his head by his...rather encouraging father.

Still, he explored the food stalls and basked in the smells and flavors. While he didn't know the first thing on how to make, well, anything here, he knew how to eat. And that, well, he made sure to sample them all.

[Cook-off's over. Cuyler wins for Something New]

Even though the defenders of Caladanan culinary traditions put up a valiant effort, it was the chef of House Mutelli who singlehandedly won hearts and stomachs of most of the attendees. In a show of clever public diplomacy and Mutelli soft power, she made sure that her pastries would come in sufficient supply for many a taste bud to succumb to them in revelry.

Daydreaming ensued of how amazing it would be to travel the Imperium and taste new things on every planet, and some who wanted to impress started smarting up on what were those cuisines like, making things up profusely. Those with no financial hopes to ever travel anywhere wished for at least a Mutelli restaurant be opened at the Atreides Landing.

Cuyler was proclaimed the supreme boar roaster and a small crowd stuck around just to watch how she would go about it, ready to assist and learn something.

[RP can ensue!]

"Shot it" Lydia shrugged "it wasn't a hunt. The shark was harassing fishing boats and breaking fishing nets, and wouldn't go away. Dunno if they ate it, I just did what was asked, it got lured up to the surface and I took it out. Harpoons would likely be easier but my gun is more precise."
"That makes sense. I figured it would have to get pulled from underwater, but if it comes near to the surface that makes it easier," he replies with a nod.

He smiled and laughed warmly.

“That’s a start!” He replied and motioned for her to follow him out towards the festival.

He would encourage general frivolity and fun as much as possible until she got tired of hanging out with some randos who seemed well-intentioned and kind, but not exceptionally bright.

Frivolity plainly didn't come naturally to her- she wasn't ever really at ease, and often assessed any new surprises for potential threats before engaging with them.

Her intellect seemed more brittle than brilliant, and any kindness or good intentions had some definite wariness to work past.

It would be pretty clear to the observant that the party wasn't something she was automatically comfortable with.

"Shooting through water isn't the easiest so baiting it to surface made the job possible with no casualties to human life."

As more commotion over the apparently unusual but tasty food was happening, and then some big focus on the boar being prepared for roasting, a frown grew.

"It's just food. Why all this?"

"It's not just food though. It's culture and tradition. That's the real focus and food just happens to be the way it's being shown and shared. They know that they make good food and drink in the same way that you know you're a good hunter and tracker. But there are a lot of people that are good at cooking, so they like to compete to know who's best and share what they make to prove it to others," Razar says, looking at the commotion and taking in the smells. "That is how chefs and craftspeople engage with their community."

"Nah, lots of folks like working in quiet. You're not alone in that. They just like celebrating the work they did with other people. Hunters like telling hunting stories and describing their skill and the challenges they face. But brewers and distillers? They like talking about their methods and ingredients and sharing and comparing their products with others that do the same thing. Who did you learn to hunt and track from? Didn't they use stories of their hunts to teach you with anecdotes and experience?"

If I have a contract, I'll tell the contractor the job is done and bring what is required. Otherwise I'd prefer to hunt and work alone, not that others really understand the idea of someone being like that."

"So why do you take contracts? It seems like you don't need to. You have the skills to survive without any other people but you still choose to do jobs for pay?" Razar asks, curious.

"I don't take contracts. But people won't leave me alone, and I watch over the farmlands and the jungle for threats from my cabin. I can survive outside the cities on most supplies but not all."

She peered at Razar.

''Well now'' she frowned, not backing down ''A cup and a half or so of crème fraiche, one tablespoon of tomato paste, one tablespoon of my spice blend with an additionnal teaspoon of garlic powder and smoked paprika.''

She crossed her arms

"You could definitely make yourself unreachable with your skills and abilities. Seems like you could avoid work requests if you didn't want them. Or you could just say no. There are other hunters and trackers out there that could do the work you do, so you're not solely responsible for it either. Seems like there's plenty of opportunity for you to avoid people... if you really didn't want them coming to you for work," Razar replies with a shrug.
