Day 4 | Morning | The Infirmary

Dr Wellington Yueh, the Suk doctor in Atreides service, had had a busy night. He had to be focusing on many patients at once even as his routine was always focusing on just one at a time. He still remained serene and professional despite unease visible in the furrow crossing his tattooed rhombus of profession, his Imperial Conditioning preventing at the subliminal level any harm to be done to any of his patients, even through delay or negligence. There was no make-do, no triage. He had been imprinted to do his utmost to ensure survival and health of anyone under his care. Right now, he took the briefest of breaks to administer another stimulant to himself to be able to keep going.

Fortunately, not all patients were in semi-terminal condition, only a few. The rest would awaken soon from sedation, the regrowth stimulants having done miracles when administered with the apt hand. Flesh wounds were repairable most of the time. Now, toxins, with their whole-of-body impact... that depended. Especially Tleilaxu toxins, genetically crafted to be unlike anything the Imperium knew, so the antidotes and protein replicators could only by approximated. After that, there was vigil and minuscule dosing adjustments.

He had done brief interviews with the witnesses when they had flown in, and kept Ambrose Pantazis around for a while as a helper who knew a bit of the trauma history of those on the beds, especially Sinsei Vim's, though he had been dismissed hours ago and if he remained, it was only because he wanted.

Despite his near incapacitating exhaustion, Ambrose stayed with the doctor. It helped that Dr. Yueh offered an occasional healing touch and a surprisingly revitalizing tincture in the early hours when dawn broke. While he acted as aid, he was undoubtedly also a patient, as was often the case for combat medics.

More valuable than any treatment he received or provided was the knowledge and experience he gained observing Dr. Yueh in action. Much of it was beyond his understanding, but not all.

Laila had actually been hurt worse than in the previous two days of crashing thopters, hostile megafauna, drugging, shigawire shibari, tear gas, poison gas, and exploding ships, but she'd never gotten medical care of this particular caliber before.

Unfortunately, she also really, really hated anything to do with needles and going under sedation a bit more than usual, and had had to consciously force herself not to try and punch Yueh in the face- and she had awoken with a start, sitting bolt upright, eyes alert, fists clenched, taking deep breaths until her body processed that the air she was breathing was clean and that she wasn't still in that goddamned cave.

Yueh approached quickly seeing her awake and apparently ready to disturb the healing environment of other patients.

"Good morning. I am Dr Yueh." He said calmly. "I am going to check your vitals now."

The basic strength of the Suk was they were ingenious diagnosticians. No treatment they ever applied was misaligned with the condition precisely they had been able to assess through non-invasive techniques inaccessible to anyone else. Palpation is all they often needed.

A series of gentle tabs along her neck and wrists.

"Please remain in the area for observation for the next hour. Please don't disturb other patients and let me deal with them first when they wake up."

She gave him a sidelong glare, despite every miracle he'd worked on her behalf.

"You don't want me disturbing them, then stop wasting time on me and make sure they're all right. I feel fine."

For a given definition of "fine," anyway.

A very specific "them" was also meant, of course.

Hadrian, Kiran, Xard, Duncan, and, even though she'd never spoken one word to the woman, Sinsei.

Three days ago, she wouldn't even have been worried about herself.

Now...

Please be okay.

Cuyler awoke coughing violently. Sleep had been fitful and restless, but she could remember little of the night. She had stumbled into the thopter with Kiran, relieved to see Sinsei and whom she had assumed was her father. She had been concerned for them, of course, and for Efren. She couldn't remember seeing him. Had he been there?

Slowly, the chef looked around. Trying to see who was present and how they were.

Yueh handled impertinence with stoicism, then moved quickly to greet and check on Cuyler.

For a time, he precluded her line of sight, checking.

"The toxin didn't penetrate into your bloodstream. It is a contact aerosol poison I must still do some research on. For now, I was able to dissolve most of the residue in your bronchi and lungs. You will be experiencing slight respiratory problems for a time. There is a small risk that they may become chronic. I will pass my conclusions on the toxin to the Suk Diseases Centre on Parmentier from where the Suk of House Mutelli may retrieve them. Melange may aid healing and arrest the symptoms but it is not available to me now."

He had said it while taking her vitals.

"Young Master Atreides was asking about your condition."

"Thank you doctor." She rasped. "Will any of my senses be damaged? How are the Vims?"

"Perhaps the smell. Too early to tell, however."

He hesitated how much he could disclose about the Vims without violating patient privacy. This was always difficult, between honesty, confidentiality, and assessment of emotional impact that could be a health challenge in itself.

"Xard Vim's afflictions are treatable or palliatively addressable. His life is not in direct peril. All I can say about Sinsei Vim is that her organism has demonstrated resilience. She must remain in induced coma for the foreseeable future."

Hadrian stirred but his vision was blurry. He made a great effort to open his eyes wider but failed miserably. It was all he could do just to lie there. But even that felt somehow taxing. And the pain, while numbed given his treatment, registered mostly as a reverberating feeling of nausea that seemed to radiate out from his chest into the rest of his body. The only indication of him being awake might be the readout on his EKG. Otherwise, he would still appear to be sedated.

She closed her eyes and laid back. "Is there anything that could help her? Anything that could be acquired or done?"

"I am going to continue doing what can be done."

Yueh's first reaction was being slightly offended, but then he reconsidered.

"Short of obtaining the Tleilaxu antidote they have undoubtedly developed concurrently with the poison. This is an impossibility for House Atreides, but perhaps not for House Mutelli. However, I won't educate you on the costs of dealings with Bene Tleilax."

He stepped away.

"I must attend to another patient. Please remain here quietly for the purpose of observation."

He then approached Hadrian.

"Good morning. How are you feeling?"

"Thank you."

Her eyes remained closed. But more fits of coughing made it clear she was still awake. The medicine and what sleep she'd managed had restored much of her strength. Full recovery, however, would take some time.

"I would like access to a kitchen, later." She said to no one in particular.

Kiran was awoken by a coughing fit turning onto their side and curling up as though painful spasms wracked their lungs. "Ugh... better to be alive and in pain, I guess..." They croaked with an attempted chuckle.

He turned his head towards the noise. Again mustered the strength to open his eyes all the way but only managed the blurry outline of the doctor.

"Where-"

Yueh decided not to take it cheekily.

"Castle Caladan, under my care. I am Dr Yueh."

He checked how Hadrian's bullet wounds were regrowing. No vital organ had been truly effected, so time was all he needed to recover. He had come with some haemorrhages but they had all been addressed. It was mostly the matter of extreme exhaustion at the moment.

"You're going to be fine soon. Rest now, rise when you feel ready, no sooner. Avoid quick movement."

He then moved to a more difficult patient, the Muadh, one of those who had been exposed to diverse traumas and health risks, including a barra dependancy. Yueh was not sure whether it was a recent or a deliberately acquired condition but it had impacted his anaesthetic options.

"Indeed. Pain can be addressed easier than death. In your case, however, analgesic medication should be chosen with great care, especially in the short term, when you'll be experiencing painful respiratory symptoms."

Any contact with skin would have elicited a delayed reaction from him. It was all he could do to pull together the strength to finish his question.

"Where-"

He said again as the doctor left. Understandable of course, the man had other patients. But he felt it needed asking.

".... is .... Laila?"

They grit their teeth, despite the pain. "Yeah... no ailar, that's for sure," they muttered grumpily, even as they wanted nothing more than to ask for it. Beg, even. This wasn't them. Just the desire for it felt it it was fogging their mind, making it hard to think about anything but that. "Do you have anything for dependancy?"

They had no idea that Yueh knew it was affecting them.

For her part, Laila was gritting her teeth and sort of pacing back and forth next to the bed she'd gotten out of.

Physically, she might have been the best off of anyone in the ward... but her recovery, as such,w as definitely being hampered by her concern for the others.

Well.

Not the others.

But her others.

"I have developed a therapy since Duke Atreides mandated research into the barra fern and ailar. You will receive related instruction and medication. However, the root cause of dependency is the changes in neural architecture and requires mental re-conditioning, so it is depends on the individual. My wife Wanna is a Bene Gesserit. I have seen their techniques being effective in this regard." He perhaps knew more than he let on. Or maybe not. "In your case, I cannot ascertain the strain you have been exposed to. It puts limits on what effects can be expected from my current therapy, but this is an ongoing research."
