Characteristics & Statements

Post by Kannon » Mon Sep 26, 2022 6:51 am

This is an adaptation of the Statement mechanics from Modiphius Dune to SW FFG.
All Characteristics keep their names, meanings, and Skill associations as in the original SW FFG.

However, whenever you increase a characteristic above 2 you choose a statement that reflects one of the main motivations in your character's life.

Those statements are not tied to this characteristic and can be applied to all rolls.

This must be a statement to which some use of skills won't apply.

Examples: "I own my victories." would collide with some uses of Stealth. "Family first" would collide with some uses of Deception. "Dignity in all things." would collide with some uses of Charm.

The statements should be invented to support the majority of your actions, but a significant minority of them - say one fourth - should be handicapped by each statement.

You can select statements that to some degree contradict each other.

When your action agrees with your statement, you get an upgrade on that roll. In addition, once per game, if you roll a Triumph on a game-relevant roll when using a statement, you can raise the skill used by 1 free of cost.

If your action is irrelevant to any of your statements but does not contradict them, you do not get an upgrade and suffer no penalties.

If you choose an action in contradiction with your statement, the difficulty of that roll is upgraded once. In addition, if you roll a Triumph, you must immediately change your statement permanently if you want to use the bonus described above - a raise of skill by 1 free of cost, once per game. This reflects a positive character growth. If your roll a Despair, you must choose: either you lose a rank of the skill, or your statement is deleted. It reflects a crisis of faith, either in your ability or in your core values. A new statement can be chosen once you roll a triumph on a future roll, but the skill rank is lost for good and can only be re-bought with XP.

If some of your statements contradict, it is possible to apply more than one statement to the roll. But if they agree, you get the bonus only from one of them.
