Hadrian looked to the plants and the trees. He became single minded in his pursuit, perhaps a tad reckless as a consequence.

Hadrian couldn't find any trace of the forager's passage. But as he looked for it trying to get into that person's mindset, he came to realisation of a few things. First, foraging for sap and honey was usually something you wouldn't do at a long distance from where you live if you had a choice about it. So either the settlement was near, or was somewhere where those ants and this sap were not as available. What he recalled from the thopter's view all the jungle looked the same from above, any change of the biome anywhere nearby was only to the east, where the mountain ridge lay.

Of course this person could just be some passerby on a longer route, stopping here to replenish. Ants they might have gorged on for sustenance as they seemed quite the caloric bombs if what they kept in their assess was real honey. But then the sap? It must have had some important utility for wherever this someone was going to.

Hadrian was getting tired of all that theorising though. It was still grasping at straws in this utter wilderness.

"Alright I'm not seeing hide nor hair of our natives. But my instincts tell me this path is semi well trodden, and the most likely point to set up shop would be to the east where the mountain ridge is." He looks at the ants. "The ants and the trees might be endemic to this area alone. So I wonder if we should gather up some of them for the purpose of trade?"

Kiran might have an idea or two where those people might have settled if they were anything like the Muadh elswhere. Or rather, what conditions they would have chosen for such a settlement.

Kiran had been quiet during the trek, keeping their eyes out for signs they knew well...

They immediately realised that if those people were Muadh, they surely have settled in some proximity to wild-growing barra ferns. In turn, the ferns required very peculiar conditions to mature to the point they can be converted into Muadh community drug, and that leaned to good mineral soil, just a bit of sunlight and just a bit of warmth throughout the day. In the jungle it was easy to go to extremes with both, so ferns required some golidlocks zone around here that logically could only occur at higher altitudes on shaded mountain slopes. They had the direction, now also corroborated by Hadrian's hunches.

But Kiran could do better. They could read from various patterns in the ferns how they had been harvested, and so from which direction, assuming their distant kin wouldn't be marking the area with some other mutually legible signs. For now, what they needed was an uphill trek to find the ferns.

As if on cue or a burst of shared consciousness, collective wisdom converged and Efren found the ever so subtle markings of the trail, having identified tiny sap droplets and sucked out ant carcasses.

"We need to head uphill. The community needs those ferns, and that's the only area it'll be cool enough for them to grow, with the minerals and drainage they need," Kiran said.

Efren nodded at Kiran’s observation.

“Trail leads up this way.” He said as he began following the sappy road.

"Wait."

Hadrian said with some defiance.

"What are we offering them for their help? What do they gain from hospitality?" He nods at the tree and the ants. "Our hosts will be owed tribute, and I think it prudent to think a few moves ahead on the matter." He looks to Kiran. "You are a native correct? Would such a gesture be without merit?"
