Day 0 | Food Fair: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

She paused

''Well, I do usually serve as a guide. It's more for the sciency types studying habitats and all but if you want to take a direct look at what we have and where to find it I can show you around''

"Please. I would really appreciate it." she smiled.

Eileen fiddled with her pockets until she found a strip of paper and a pencil

''Here's where you can usually find me. If not there your can ask around, most people know me.'' she grinned ''I hope you are not afraid of getting wet.''

"Is this your first time at the festival?"

She seemed a bit surprised at being addressed at all, a bit taken aback at who she'd been addressed by, and then she... shrugged.

Clearly she wasn't somebody with extensive social training.

"Yep. Only been on Caladan about two and a half years."

He smiled, "Oh really? Well, welcome! Bunch of silly stuff going on all day. It's generally a good time though."

He then asked, "Anything like this back where you're from?"

"I will admit. I don't spend much time outside." She grinned. "But, there is little I wouldn't do to discover new flavors and textures."

He then asked, "Anything like this back where you're from?"

"Used to be."

She felt her appetite curdling a bit. Was this Atreides flunky mocking her? Interrogating her to make sure she was who she was supposed to be?

"A bit less contented, maybe. And festivals on Ecaz tended to be more about 'look at all the fogwood we've got, look how pristine we've kept this place.' And more psychoactives. Then we had the damn war, and damn Duke Vidal causing us to fight our own damn people until he got the chop. Not a lot of festivals between that and when I took my leave."

The young man nodded as she finished speaking, "I'd guess not. The grey hairs in the service all describe all the stuff with Ecaz as definitely... un-festive. Hopefully things haven't been terrible for you since getting here."

He extended out his hand as he introduced himself, "Name's Efren."

"Laila. And Caladan's been all right, far as it goes. Better'n Grumman, anyway."

That might have been a joke.

"High praise." He said with a chuckle through his nose.

"Well Laila, you're welcome to hang out with me and some of my buddies today. I've been to pretty much every one of these since I was way little. Hit up some of the fun things and make fun of the stupid stuff people end up doing."

He smiled, "Or do some stupid stuff to give people something to make fun of in case it gets too boring."

"I do enough stupid stuff on regular days, think I might just stick to watching. Fair warning, I'm not, uh... tactful. Or refined."

And was plainly a bit on edge, although about what it might be hard to tell.

“You’ll fit right in then. Most of the guys can’t tell tact from a kick in the teeth.” He smiled.

“But I won’t drag you along if you’re not interested. Something about your gait tells me I couldn’t even if I wanted to.” He reached out and grabbed some of the traditional food that had been brought out.

"I get a feeling this is more your kind of place though."

"Actually, my kind of place is in a thopter, looking down at the landscape from a few hundred feet. But this isn't so bad as long as the food is better than mine," he replies.

"You tracked and hunted it down? I'm sure that Uncle Roger or someone else arranging things here wants to give you some sort of public praise, and that's why that asked you to stay. Probably as part of the announcement for who gets to roast it."

He likewise takes little bits of food, here and there, getting a good mix, but mostly small bites. He's definitely not eating a lot.

"Military type huh. Any break is a good one in that line of work" Lydia replied with a small nod of respect "and if there is any form of announcement like that I'm gone. Bad enough when people don't take a hint and come to my door now, don't want to double it."

There was a deeper frown.

"At this rate I'll actually need to move my cabin into the jungle or build a treehouse to live in."

"I mean... I don't have much else going on, so... hell, sure, if only for a little while."

She didn't know which foods were traditional and which weren't, so Laila just went for what smelled good.

"I can deal with people approaching to request services. It's why I'm here, to hunt or deal with large beasts. It's the ones that just want to talk. Those ones won't take the hint. Would rather be cornered by multiple beasts with limited ammo than deal with another question about my future social plans."

She took a moment to bite off a large mouthful of meat from the skewer.

“Great!” He said with a smile and a friendly pat on the shoulder.

“You ever see a fire-knife dance before? The local muadhi are masters of it. Really cool stuff.”
